It was December 5, 2022. An anonymous member of the CNBC Technology Executive Council responded to the question “what has been the most important technology-related news story of 2022?” in our Q4 survey with seven letters: ChatGPT. What’s that? Now, we all know. And when it comes time to ask that question in 2023, we won’t even have to. AI is the story of the year, the decade (the century?). The breakthrough into the public square has brought endless experimentation and debate, along with excitement and fear, over how it will be used and controlled, how it will improve productivity or replace workers, whether it will save the world or destroy humanity.
